The Rotavirus/Adenovirus+Astrovirus Combo Rapid Test (Feces) is a rapid chromatographic immunoassay for the qualitative detection of rotavirus, adenovirus and astrovirus in human fecal specimens to aid in the diagnosis of rotavirus, adenovirus or astrovirus infection.
Rotavirus, Adenovirus, and Astrovirus are major viral causes of acute gastroenteritis, particularly in young children. Rotavirus is the most prevalent, infamous for causing severe, dehydrating diarrhea in infants globally. It is highly contagious and often leads to hospitalization due to significant fluid loss.
Adenovirus, specifically species F (types 40 and 41), is the second most common viral cause of childhood diarrhea. Unlike the other two, it has a longer incubation period and can affect various body systems, but gastroenteritis remains a primary manifestation. Astrovirus generally causes mildersymptoms compared to Rotavirus, presenting with diarrhea, vomiting, and fever, mostly during winter months.
Diagnosing these infections clinically is difficult due to overlapping symptoms. Therefore, rapid diagnostic tests are commonly used to detect specific viral antigens in stool samples. This differentiation is crucial for patient management, primarily involving supportive rehydration therapy, as no specific antiviral treatments exist for these viral gastroenteritis agents.
